Mills Gets First Super Win in Whynot Thriller
WHYNOT, Miss (June 23) — Scoring his first ever Super Late Model victory in dramatic fashion, Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., outdueled polesitter Payton Freeman of Commerce, Ga., in an epic back-and-forth battle throughout Friday's Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series feature at Whynot Motorsports Park to earn $5,000 for his first series victory.
The third-starting Mills swapped the lead six times with Freeman in the second half of the 40-lapper, which saw eight lead changes in total among three drivers. Mills took the lead for good with six laps remaining and led by 0.331 seconds at the finish.
Freeman, who led a race-high 29 laps, repelled Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., late to finish second. Herrington, the HTF Series points leader, started ninth and finished third ahead of Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., and Neil Baggett of Columbus, Miss.
Second-starting Jeremy Shaw of Millport, Ala., led the race's first two laps before slipping back to 10th at the finish.
