Hunt The Front Super Dirt Series
Putnam Wins Wild Magnolia Feature
COLUMBUS, Miss. (May 13) — Josh Putnam of Florence, Ala., mastered a tricky Magnolia Motor Speedway on his way to picking up a $10,000 victory in Saturday night's Governor's Cup for the Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series presented by Sweet Victory Apparel.
Putnam took control when race-long leader Wil Herrington spun midway through the race, which was cut from 50 laps to 25 due to rough track conditions. Putnam led the final 12 laps to claim the victory by just over four seconds ahead of Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla.
“Man, I felt like I was screwing up every lap down there on that bottom, but I knew early we were good out on the race track,” Putnam said. “I mean I hate that for Wil down there, that was an unfortunate break for him. I don’t know that we’d ever got by him, I think me and him had two good race cars, for what we had here.
"When I got the lead there, I made up my mind I was gonna stay on the bottom and however slow I had to get into the bottom and try to keep my wheels on my race car and keep the driveline in it, that’s what we was gonna do. You know, it paid off.”
Tenth-starting Joiner topped a back-and-forth battle with pole-starting John Henderson of North Augusta, Ga., who rallied to finish third after dropping out of the top five early in the race. Second-starting Herrington recovered from his spin to finish fourth, while Ryan Crane of Panama City, Fla., advanced nine positions to finish fifth.
